Politics and the Church

What follows below is the beginning of a blog that I ask every ABC member and guest to read.  This issue concerns me deeply.  Ever two years since I’ve been a pastor, I’ve seen politics divide a church, cause people to leave angry, and cause damage to the cause of Jesus.

Our country is deeply divided politically. Tensions are high. Anger is rising. Disagreement often erupts into vicious putdowns, violence, and hatred.

We can’t let that anger and that hatred invade the church.

Jesus taught us a principle that we need to apply to politics and church life. He said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9, NIV)

I ask ABC leaders and members to be wise and loving peacemakers. Specifically, I ask each of us to do these things:

How Does Jesus Want Us To Live?

We have spent this year in the Gospel  of John, studying who Jesus is.  We’ve looked at His “I Am” statements, and we’ve focused on His Crucifixion and Resurrection.

Once we believe in Him, how does He want us to live?  What does a Jesus life look like?  What commands did He teach us?  What principles are we to focus on?  Are there certain “rules” we are to follow?

Our next Sunday series, “The Jesus Way” will focus on the red-letter words of Jesus.  We know who He is.  How does He want us to live?

This series begins on Sunday morning, May 17, at 8:30 or 11:00 am

Does Our Homeless Ministry Change Lives?

In the first two months since we reopened IHELP (Interfaith Homeless Emergency Program) the ministry has experienced great success–and some challenges.  As of March 31, 18 different individuals were housed. 6 of them have been able to secure permanent housing, and 2 more were able to re-unite with family.

Of those 18, four have some form of mental illness, four have physical disabilities, 2 are survivors of domestic violence, and one is a veteran.  7 of them have some earned income, 2 get Social Security benefits, and 9 had no employment at the time they entered the program–several of those are now working!

If you’re into statistics, that’s a 44% success rate in getting people off of the streets in less than 60 days!

We currently house on Tuesdays and Wednesday nights, and we have 12 individuals (our limit) in the program.  To the members of ABC, your willingness to participate in this ministry is definitely helping people in the name of Jesus.  To those servants who work in the ministry, THANKS!  You are making a real difference!

Our VBS theme is "Illumination Station" and it's scheduled for June 7-11!
